Inside Returns Marble Mantels
On a mantel, the Return is the space designed into the 'inside' of a mantel, to accommodate the facing that is on the wall surrounding the fireplace opening. Nearly all fireplace openings have some type of stone facing on the wall surrounding the fireplace. This facing is either flush with or recessed into the drywall around it, or it protrudes out into the room, typically between 3/4" and up to 5 or 6."
Most of our Marble Mantels have a Standard Return of about 5" (but a few have a more shallow standard Return). If there is stone facing on the wall surrounding your fireplace, or if you will be adding stone facing ... if the facing is built out to the depth of the Standard Return of the mantel, you do not need the Custom Return option when ordering the mantel. If, however, your stone facing is flush or protrudes less than the standard mantel return depth, you may select our Custom Return option, and tell us the thickness of your facing so we'll know how much clearance your mantel return will need to accommodate your stone facing.
The following photos are included to help describe "inside returns."
